Dog Adoption & Alternative Careers

Every Guiding Eyes dog is valued and, ultimately, finds its place in the world

The best guide dogs are those who want to be guide dogs. It’s not for every pup! Dogs that are not suited for guide work can still pursue other careers, including:

Service Dogs

Guiding Eyes collaborates with various organizations including NEADS, Dogs for Better Lives, and Warrior Canine Connection. The dogs that are placed with these organizations are trained to offer crucial support to individuals dealing with issues like profound hearing loss and autism, as well as to veterans coping with PTSD.

Detection Dogs

For our high-energy dogs who love to sniff, detection work can be ideal. A detection dog is trained to use its nose to track down drugs and other illegal items. We partner with several top-notch agencies, including the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF) and the Connecticut State Police, for our dogs who would excel at detection.

Cherished Pets

Dogs that are not suitable for guide or service careers make wonderful pets and are available at times to carefully screened families and individuals through our Public Adoption program.

Whether as a guide dog, a service dog, a detection dog, or a loving family pet, it’s important that each of our dogs finds their place in the world.
